Asha Bhosle is an Indian playback singer who has recorded over 12,000 songs in 20 different languages. Born in 1933 in Sangli, Maharashtra, she is the younger sister of another legendary Indian playback singer, Lata Mangeshkar. Bhosle began her music career in the 1940s and has since become one of the most celebrated singers in Indian cinema.

In her career spanning over eight decades she has recorded songs for films and albums in various Indian languages and received several accolades including two National Film Awards,four BFJA Awards ¬†eighteen Maharashtra State Film Awards, nine Filmfare Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award and a record seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer. In addition to two Grammy nominations. In 2000, she was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award India’s highest award in the field of cinema. In 2008, she was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Vibhushan the second-highest civilian honour of the country. The Guinness Book of World Records acknowledged Bhosle in 2011 as the most recorded artist in music history.

 

Her family moved to Mumbai when she was just 10 years old, and she began her musical training under her father’s guidance. She soon became a part of her father’s theatrical productions, singing and acting in plays.

Her musical career began in earnest when she was just 16 years old. She was introduced to music director S.D. Burman, who gave her a chance to sing in the film “Majhli Didi” (1950). Her first solo hit came in the film “Raat Ki Raani” (1949), and she went on to become one of the most sought-after playback singers in the Indian film industry.

In 1955, Ashs married Ganpatrao Bhosle, who was also a music director. The couple had three children together: Hemant, Varsha, and Anand. However, their marriage was troubled, and they separated in 1960. They ware together from (1949-1960). Then married R.D. Burman in 1980. Thet were together untill R.D. Burman’s Death(1994) And her son Hemant Bhosle died of Cancer and daughter Varsha was commited sucide.

Asha Bhosle’s career continued to flourish throughout the 1960s and 1970s, and she became known for her versatility and ability to sing a wide range of genres, including classical, folk, and Western-style pop music. She collaborated with many of the leading composers of the time, including R.D. Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, and Kalyanji-Anandji.

Asha Bhosle’s voice has graced some of the most iconic songs in Indian cinema. She has recorded songs for a wide variety of films, from romantic dramas to action thrillers. Some of her most popular songs include:

1. Dum Maro Dum – This song from the film “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” (1971) was composed by R.D. Burman and written by Anand Bakshi.

2. Piya Tu Ab To Aaja – Another hit from “Caravan” (1971), this song was also composed by R.D. Burman and written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

3. Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko – This romantic song from “Yaadon Ki Baaraat” (1973) was composed by R.D. Burman and written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

4. In Aankhon Ki Masti – This sultry song from the film “Umrao Jaan” (1981) was composed by Khayyam and written by Shahryar.

5. Mera Kuchh Saaman – This melancholic song from the film “Ijaazat” (1987) was composed by R.D. Burman and written by Gulzar.

Bhosle has not only sung some of the most popular songs in Indian cinema but has also written and composed songs herself. She has also collaborated with international artists, including the British band Cornershop, with whom she recorded the hit single “Brimful of Asha” in 1997.
