Lata Mangeshkar, also known as the ‘Nightingale of India’, was one of the renowned most versatile singers in the Indian film industry. She is a living legend and an inspiration for generations of singers. Lata Mangeshkar has been singing for over seven decades and has a vast repertoire of songs that range from classical to film music. She is also known for her philanthropic work and has won numerous awards for her contribution to music and society. 

Lata Mangeshkar was born on September 28, 1929, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India. Her father, Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, was a renowned classical musician and theatre actor, and her mother, Shevanti, was also a singer.

Lata Mangeshkar showed an early interest in music and started training in classical music from a young age. Her father was her first guru, and she later trained under other renowned musicians like Aman Ali Khan and Pandit Tulsidas Sharma

Lata Mangeshkar’s career as a playback singer started in 1942 when she was just 13 years old. She sang her first song, “Naachu Yaa Gade, Khelu Saari Mani Haus Bhaari,” for the Marathi film Kiti Hasaal (1942). Her breakthrough came with the song “Aayega Aanewala” from the film Mahal (1949), which was composed by music director Khemchand Prakash. The song became an instant hit and catapulted Lata Mangeshkar to fame.

Lata Mangeshkar has recorded over 30,000 songs in various languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, and Gujarati. Lata recorded songs in over thirty-six Indian languages and a few foreign languages. Her foreign languages included English, Indonesian, Russian, Dutch, Nepali, and Swahili She has sung for some of the most prominent music directors in India, including S.D. Burman, R.D. Burman, Shankar Jaikishan, Naushad, and A.R. Rahman.

Lata Mangeshkar has won numerous awards and accolades throughout her illustrious career.
She received In 1989, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award was bestowed on her by the Government  of India In 2001, in recognition of her contributions to the nation, she was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour; she is only the second female singer, after M. S Subbulakshmi to receive this honor France conferred on her its highest civilian award, Officer of the National Order of the Legion of Honour, in 2007.

She was the recipient of three National Film Awards, 15 Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Awards, four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards, two Filmfare Special Awards, the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award and many more.

In 1974, she was one of the first Indian playback singers to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England. Her last recorded song was “Saugandh Mujhe Is Mitti ki” released on 30 March 2019 as a tribute to the Indian Army and the Nation.

She sang many songs and all are evergreen . Her music has touched the hearts of Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo – Live Performance (1963)of people around the world and will continue to do so for generations to come. 

She has sung for some of the most prominent music directors in India, including S.D. Burman, R.D. Burman, Shankar Jaikishan, Naushad, and A.R. Rahman.

A patriotic song that was performed live by Lata Mangeshkar in the presence of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo is an emotional tribute to the Indian soldiers who lost their lives in the Indo-China war of 1962.

2. “Bekhudi Mein Sanam” from the film Haseena Maan Jaayegi (1968) won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer.

3. “Chalte Chalte” from the film Pakeezah (1972) won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer.

4. “Didi Tera Devar Deewana” from the film Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994) won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer.

5. Tere Liye” from the film Veer-Zaara (2004) won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer and the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer.

In 1974, she appeared in the Guinness World Records  which listed her as the most recorded artist in history between 1948 and 1987.

On 8 January 2022, Lata Mangeshkar tested positive for COVID-19 with mild symptoms and was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital intensive care unit in Mumbai.  Finally she died on 6 February 2022 from multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, at the age of 92. She had undergone 28 days of constant treatment for pneumonia and COVID-19.

Lata Mangeshkar’s contribution to Indian music is unparalleled. She has not only given us some of the most beautiful and soul-stirring melodies but has also inspired generations of singers with her talent and dedication. Her music has touched the hearts of millions of people around the world and will continue to do so for generations to come. As she continues to be a role model and an inspiration for many, Lata Mangeshkar remains the Queen of Melodies in the world of Indian music.
