Mukesh Chand Mathur, popularly known as Mukesh, was a legendary Indian playback singer, born on July 22, 1923, in Delhi, India. He was the sixth of ten children in his family, and his father was a traditional folk musician. Mukesh developed a passion for music at an early age, and he began to sing as a child.
Mukesh moved to Mumbai in 1940 to pursue his career in the film industry, and he started his journey by singing for a small production company. He got his first break as a playback singer in the movie “Nirdosh” in 1941, but it was his song “Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De” from the movie “Pahali Nazar” in 1945 that brought him recognition and fame.
Mukesh was known for his deep and soulful voice that touched the hearts of millions of people in India and around the world. He collaborated with legendary music directors like Shankar Jaikishan, Laxmikant Pyarelal, and Naushad, among others, and sang for some of the biggest Bollywood stars like Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, and Dev Anand.
Mukesh was a versatile singer who could sing a wide range of songs, from romantic ballads to patriotic anthems. Some of his most famous songs include “Kabhi Kabhie Mere Dil Mein,” “Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan,” “Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar Hoon,” and “Chand Si Mehbooba Ho Meri.”
Over the course of his career, Mukesh won numerous awards for his singing, including the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1974 for the song “Kai Baar Yuhi Dekha Hai” from the movie “Rajnigandha.” He also received the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer four times for the songs “Sab Kuch Seekha Humne” from the movie “Anari” in 1959, “Sawan Ka Mahina” from the movie “Milan” in 1968, “Jai Bolo Beimaan Ki” from the movie “Beimaan” in 1972, and “Kabhie Kabhie Mere Dil Mein” from the movie “Kabhie Kabhie” in 1976.
