Mohammed Rafi was a legendary Indian playback singer who is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential singers of all time. He was notable for his versatility and range of voice and still remembered and loved by music lovers around the world for his melodious voice and contribution to Indian music. He had a special ability to mould his voice to the person and style of the actor lip-syncing the song on screen in the movie.

He was born on December 24, 1924, in Kotla Sultan Singh, Punjab, British India (now in Pakistan). His father was Hajji Ali Mohammad and mother was Allah Rakhi. The nick name of Mohammad was Pheeko.

He began his singing career in 1944 and went on to record over 5,000 songs spanning several languages and dialects such as Konkani, Assamese, Bhojpuri, Odia, Bengali, Marathi, Sindhi, Kannada, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, etc. A part from Indian languages. he also sang in some foreign languages, including English, Farsi Arabic , Mauritian, Creole, and Dutch language.

He had the ability to infuse emotion and depth into every song he sang, whether it was a romantic ballad or a soulful ghazal. His contributions to Indian music have earned him several awards.

He received six Filmfare Award and one National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer . In 1967, he was honored with the Padma Shri award by the Government of India . In 2001, Rafi was honored with the “Best Singer of the Millennium” title by  Hero Honda  and Stardust magazine. In 2013, Rafi was voted for the Greatest Voice in Hindi Cinema .

Rafi kept his most memorable his first song in Lahore for the Punjabi film Gul Baloch (1944). In Bombay (Presently Mumbai) Rafi played his first actual part in Laila Majnu (1949). His earliest recording in Hindi, likewise in Bombay, were for movies, for example, Gaon ki gori (1945), Samaj ko badal dalo (1947), and Jugnu (1947).
